What is a post-partum doula?

A doula can also be employed specifically to help out after the birth. This could either be a continuation of the birth doula work, but you can also hire a ‘Post Partum doula’ just for support after your birth. The post partum doula comes to you in your home and can help out with a myriad of things. Most commonly she would help new parents with:

  • breastfeeding issues,
  • with light housework, like shopping for groceries and prepare meals or complete other household tasks like washing dishes or clothes
  • with coming to terms with her new role and all the feeling involved with being a new Mum
  • nurse the baby while Mum and/or Dad takes a well earned nap or a shower.
  • Play with older children, spend time with the baby, allowing parents to cuddle and have quality time with older children or just be alone together
  • Make referrals to any local or informational resources that the parents might need
  • Last but not least she can provide some adult company and a compassionate ear or even a foot rub.

In our society today there are possibilities for help with medical issues through our health system. This is very valuable for new mothers. What we have lost in our modern life is the close community of help and support we were always meant to have. Having a post partum doula is a holistic way of caring for new Mum’s well being in the early days with their new babies. Gift vouchers available as a valuable present for new parents ?
